Available Assessment Services

Fitness Assessment

Our Fitness Assessment service assesses the 5 components of fitness: cardiovascular endurance, body composition, muscular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. Results obtained from the fitness assessment provide an accurate measure of your current fitness level. Regular assessments are a great way to track change over time. Our fitness staff will compare your results to peers in your age group, using guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Upgrade with Bod Pod® and/or Cardio Coach® options available.

Maximal Oxygen Consumption (VO2 Max)

Personal trainers utilize the Cardio Coach® unit to measure maximal oxygen consumption or VO2 max, an indication of an individual’s cardiovascular fitness. Results collected from this maximal test allow personal trainers to calculate target intensity zones to increase endurance, increase anaerobic capacity and reduce fatigue.

Body Composition

Body composition refers to the relative percentage of body weight that is fat mass vs. lean muscle mass. Rec Sports offers three different methods of measuring body composition, including the Bod Pod®, skinfold measurements, and bioelectrical impedence analysis (BIA). View more in depth descriptions of each service below.

NEW - Bod Pod®

This new feature offered by Recreational Sports measures a participant's body composition by calculating the body's density. The Bod Pod® uses air displacement technology to determine body composition (fat and fat-free mass) in adults and children. It is a complete system based on the same gold standard operating principle as hydrostatic (or "underwater") weighing, except that the Bod Pod uses patented Air Displacement Plethysmography, instead of water, for highly accurate, fast, and safe results.

Skinfold Measurements

The principle behind this technique, performed with a skinfold caliper, is that the amount of subcutaneous fat is proportional to the total amount of body fat we have. Fat distribution varies greatly with gender, age and ethnicity, making it even more important for participants to know their body fat percentage. Our fitness staff will compare your results to peers in your age group, using guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)

This method involves the passing of a small electric current (absolutely painless) through the body and measuring the impedance or resistance to the current’s flow. Fat-free tissue is a good conductor of electrical current, whereas fat is not. Accurate BIA measurements are highly dependent on the hydration level of the participant, so certain criteria exist for the accurate measurement of body fat percentage using this method. The fitness staff will inform you of these criteria in advance.
