About the Grand Prix Series

The University of Minnesota will host the 2012 Minneapolis Grand Prix Swimming Series from November 9-11 at the University Aquatic Center. Olympic Gold medalist swimmers Ryan Lochte and Missy Franklin will be a headlining a talent-packed Minneapolis Grand Prix field. Local stars, Rachel Bootsma (Eden Prairie) and David Plummer (Minnetonka) will also compete during the weekend.

The Minneapolis Grand Prix will mark the first stop of the 2012-2013 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series. The Series will conclude June 2, 2013 in Santa Clara, Calif., and will also feature stops in Austin, Texas, Orlando Fla., Mesa, Ariz., and Charlotte, N.C. 

Preliminary heats in Minneapolis will start at 9 a.m. CT, Friday through Sunday, with finals beginning at 6 p.m. CT. Visit www.usaswimming.org for a complete schedule of events. Tickets may be purchased at the door. USA Swimming will also provide a live webcast of the event online which can be viewed below during the event.

The USA Swimming Grand Prix Series serves as an opportunity for swimmers to race against some of the best competition in the country as they continue their preparation for the 2012 FINA Short Course FINA World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey as well as the 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.

About the Aquatic Center

Completed in 1990, the Dororthy L. Shepard Pool and the separate Diving
Well have been the site of 21 swimming world records, 1 diving world record, 38 masters swimming world records, and 208 disabled swimming records.

The Aquatic Center is open nearly 5,000 hours each year, and on average, 1,700 people use the facilities and programs each day. The University Aquatic Center, recent winner of the 2009 National Parks and Recreation Association (NRPA) Excellence in Aquatics Award, services over 120 rentals and more than 60 special events each year. Many different programs including Learn to Swim, the Twin Cities Swim Team, Twin City Divers, University of Minnesota Athletics and Sport Clubs, local swim clubs and many organizations from around the Twin Cities utilize the University Aquatic Center facilities. Since opening on June 1, 1990, there have been 7,093,021 participants in the University Aquatic Programs and Facilities. The University of Minnesota Aquatic Center staff and participants are celebrating nineteen years of success and are looking forward continuing its tradition of excellence.
